No Fashion Places is a photographic and visual arts compilation by Yuri Catania that debuted in 2007 with the first No Fashion Places exhibition in Milan. Today it comprises the projects: American Flag (Anthology One, Black Neon, McPorn), Human Light Messages and a number of limited-edition Street Photography series.
No Fashion Places is also the journey taken by Yuri Catania and Silvia Torricelli, partners in life and work, the fruit of their decision to cross the U.S. with their Airstream. The idea for the trip arose from their desire to revisit, at 60 years’ remove, the places where Swiss photographer Robert Frank dropped anchor in 1955-1956 and to recount them and the changed social and cultural context through another European photographic eye.
They were also curious to visit the states that elected Donald Trump in 2016 and to portray the faces of the people who live and work in those places, so different from the ‘States’ we are used to seeing in images of the big cities such as New York and Los Angeles.
Photography and videography of the life experiences of ‘local’ people, in forgotten places with eminent origins, now devoured by globalization. A tribute to the America that was and to what remains, in a sort of melancholy chronicle alternating snapshots in brilliant colors with faded images of desolate landscapes. The notes are decadent, on a staff of subtle irony: the melody of an America of strong social and cultural contrasts.
It is in this contest that the photographer sees the beauty and records it with his eye and his sensibility. He sings of artists, musicians, people of talent who represent excellence in their chosen fields. The so-nicknamed “American Makers” who have made their artistic talents their life, with passion and sacrifice. People who have decided to not conform to mass culture but to carry forward their professions in respect of authentic American traditions, producing one-of-a-kind objects, unique pieces, epitomic creations of an America that is disappearing yet still resists.
A journey to and through an artistic and crafts renaissance against the backdrop of a decadent America that can still spawn dreams.
The trip began on 27 December 2017 in Denver, Colorado, and has crossed New Mexico and Texas. The first 2100 miles were just the first on a long route that will unfurl over the next five years. The decision to travel with an Airstream is an American dream come true. A futuristic trailer a vintage American icon par excellence, today the emblem of an on-the-road lifestyle unique in its genre and careful with nature. A lifestyle choice under the banner of freedom, a way to enjoy the entire world ahead in the sure knowledge that the most beautiful dream is the one you are living right now.
A journey within a journey, a journey to share on the road as it opens before us.
