We arranged to meet Charley after a rehearsal for the concert at the John T. Floore Country Store in Helotes, Texas.
The location has been a point of reference for live music in the state for more than 70 years; it has played host to such legends as Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, B. B. King, Willie Nelson, and countless others.
Tonight, it’s Charley Crockett playing.
He greets us Texas-style, with a broad grin and a warm handshake. He sits down at our table, entirely at ease. He tells us about his origins: he was born in southwestern Texas, San Benito to be exact, in the Rio Grande valley almost at the Mexican border, and spent parts of his childhood in Dallas and New Orleans.
He played and sang on the street just about everywhere, from the New York subway to various quartiers of Paris; in Denmark and in North Africa.
He is a citizen of the world and his is a melting-pot culture. He learned from the bands he encountered on his travels; he matched chords with them and experimented. He lives on songs. His life is the music he plays, a mix of swing, blues, and jazz.
Charley Crockett is more than personable and his “West Texas dandy” style wins us over completely. His look is elegant and retro; he dresses in “old-style” vintage Americana.
He loves the desert but HIS HOME IS THE STREET.
Onstage, his voice carries us away with its warm, deep timbre. He dances, plays, and sings. You can’t but fall under the spell and dance to the rhythms of his latest release, “Lonesome as a Shadow,” in Helotes, Texas, before a packed crowd of applauding fans.
Bravo Charley! And good luck! We’ll be waiting for you in Italy on your next tour.
